5 Essential OTC Medicines Every Household Should Have

From fever to allergies, having the right over-the-counter medicines at home can save you a trip to the clinic. Here are the five must-haves for every medicine cabinet.

Why a Well-Stocked Medicine Cabinet Matters

Minor health issues — a sudden fever, an upset stomach, or a mild allergic reaction — can happen at any time. Having the right medicines at home means you can respond quickly, reduce discomfort, and avoid unnecessary emergency visits.

Here are the five OTC medicines every Bangladeshi household should stock:

1. Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)

What it treats: Fever, headache, mild to moderate pain (toothache, body ache).

Common brands: Napa, Ace, Paracet

Paracetamol is the most widely used painkiller and fever reducer in the world. It is safe for adults and children when used at the correct dose. Always follow the label — never exceed 4 grams (8 standard 500 mg tablets) per day for adults.

When to use it: Temperature above 38°C, mild headache, post-vaccination fever.

2. Antacids (Calcium Carbonate or Magnesium Hydroxide)

What it treats: Heartburn, acid indigestion, upset stomach, bloating.

Common brands: Rennie, Gelusil, Maalox

Spicy food, irregular eating habits, and stress can all trigger acidity. Antacids neutralise stomach acid quickly and provide relief within minutes. They are generally safe for short-term use.

When to use it: After heavy or spicy meals, if you feel a burning sensation in the chest or throat.

3. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)

What it treats: Dehydration from diarrhoea, vomiting, or excessive sweating.

Common brands: Saline, Orsaline-N, Electral

Bangladesh's hot and humid climate makes dehydration a serious risk, especially for children and the elderly. ORS packets dissolved in clean water quickly restore lost fluids and electrolytes.

When to use it: Any bout of diarrhoea or vomiting, especially in children under five.

4. Antihistamine (Loratadine or Cetirizine)

What it treats: Allergic rhinitis, hay fever, skin rashes, insect bites, runny nose.

Common brands: Lorfast, Alatrol, Zyrtec

Allergies are extremely common in Bangladesh due to dust, pollen, and pollution. A second-generation antihistamine like cetirizine works within 30 minutes and does not cause significant drowsiness.

When to use it: Sneezing, watery eyes, skin itching, or hives after known allergen exposure.

5. Antiseptic Solution or Cream

What it treats: Minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and skin infections.

Common brands: Dettol, Savlon, Betadine

A good antiseptic prevents infection in minor wounds. Keep both a liquid solution for cleaning wounds and an antiseptic cream for applying afterward. Combined with sterile bandages and gauze, this forms the backbone of any first aid kit.

When to use it: Any minor cut, abrasion, insect bite with broken skin, or small burn.

Important Reminders

  • Always check expiry dates before use.
  • Store medicines in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of children's reach.
  • Paracetamol and alcohol do not mix — avoid taking paracetamol if you have consumed alcohol.
  • If symptoms persist beyond 48–72 hours, see a licensed doctor.
  • Never share prescription medicines with family members.
